Question mark in a circle.What is a Quality Enhancement Plan or QEP?

QEP stands for Quality Enhancement Plan, an extremely significant component of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) reaffirmation of accreditation process.  SACSCOC defines the QEP as a "carefully designed and focused course of action that addresses a well-defined topic or issue related to enhancing student learning."  The QEP gives Howard College the opportunity to develop a targeted five-year plan that improves some aspect of its studentsí education.

Howard College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), which requires the college to submit a QEP as part of the 2016 accreditation reaffirmation.  SACSCOC expects the QEP to enhance institutional quality by improving student learning in a focused area as well as have a culture-changing effect on HC.  In other words, without accreditation, a degree from HC wouldn’t be acceptable to employers and other colleges or universities.  Plus, students can only get financial aid from accredited institutions.

Aside from being a huge piece of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) requirements, the whole idea behind a QEP is to focus on an area where we can do a better job to help our students learn.  Not to mention it’ll help HC to be more in tune with today’s students and what they need.

Well, pretty much EVERYONE at HC!  Our QEP topic selection was led by a team of faculty, staff and students.  Right now though, our QEP Task Force members are working hard with other college employees to identify and design specific strategies on how to improve the first year college experience for our students.

The Howard College QEP is titled "Howard College LEADS Your Way".  It is designed as a first year experience which fosters the success of first-time, full-time students by strengthening their academic and social engagement.

HC wants to create a challenging environment which will help you to be more engaged in planning for your academic and career goals.  But we also want you to realize how important it is to be engaged in campus and community activities and service work.  Studies show that students who are actively involved in what’s going on around them are more likely to succeed.  Bottom line, we want you to be successful!

  1. A 12-week LEADS course which will help me identify my own strengths and areas that I need to improve so that I will become a strong, goal-oriented student who loves to learn!
  2. A Coach who will focus on my specific learning cluster by meeting with me and my peers weekly to make sure we’re staying on the path to success.
  3. Mentors who will meet with me and counsel me whenever I have personal challenges or just have questions.
  4. Student activities local to me such as lecture series, community projects, social events and student clubs related to my educational goals.
