Tessa's Thoughts on Howard College

Why Howard College?
Howard College offers a wonderful program through the Texas Workforce who helps those who cannot afford a college education and cannot get financial aid.  This is how I originally started here at Howard.  Being in Howard for my second semester now, I have chosen to finish this program and continue my education through them with other prerequisite courses as I work because it is smaller and gives you a more personal feel. Everyone remembers you that you come in contact with and gives you that feel of you matter.  They also have great staff and instructors that really care and will try and will do everything they can to try and help you.

Why a CMA?
I always knew I wanted in the medical field, but I wasn’t sure what the right place in it for me. In 2014 I was in a car accident and with all the different medical personal I had to deal with at the end of my recovery I knew it was time to start my dream and be one of those people who are there to help in someone else’s journey , but  I had no clue where to start. As I was online searching different medical opportunities in San Angelo, I found Howard College and started looking what each of their programs was about.  I decided that this program had everything I had been looking for and was a great chance to fulfill my dream of entering the field I wanted in for so long.

Career Goals
My future plan is to finish this program and work in a clinic as a Medical Assistant while taking prerequisite courses a little at a time till I can apply for a nursing program.  I haven’t decided how far or what type of nursing program yet, but I do know that from the Medical Assistant program I love this and want to be able to further my education and skills in being able to help others.

Favorite Professor
We have had all great instructors through the program so far.  My favorites have been Mrs. Gina Brown and Mrs. Michelle Trubenstein.  These two women have been there for any question I had, trouble I was having and guidance every time I needed it.  They have gone far beyond what I expected any of our instructors to have when I registered for this program.

My Awards / Honors
Being chosen for the Howard College student spotlight is a great honor for me. I remember when I first got on the website thinking how awesome it would be to work hard enough to achieve getting to be one of the people on there, but how hard it would be to do so because there was probably so many great students.

Best Studying Advice
Never give up. Put in every hour you can by prioritizing your time and putting school above any and everything.  School isn’t forever and it’s so worth it.  Join a study group once or twice a week, always ask questions when you don’t understand something.  There is never a wrong question and the instructors do not see you or any of them as a dumb question.  If you are having trouble still don’t be afraid to talk to your instructor, they have been a course changer for me when I came to them because my study habits weren’t working.  They will help to find a way you get and work with you to make sure your understanding. Flashcards have been one of my saviors to studying.

Most Valuable Learning Experience
The power of prayer and turning to the instructors when you find yourself needing help.  I have been faced with many obstacles that seemed impossible to be able to accomplish at the beginning of the semester to be able to continue through to this semester.  On the first obstacle that came up I spoke with my instructor about it and we ended up talking about prayer and the Lord providing in many ways.  I began to pray every day, and every obstacle that came up I would give it to the Lord in prayer and it was answered in many different forms.  Two of my instructors turned out to be the amazing help and guidance I was asking for.

Relax and Have Fun
For having fun as a mother of 4 we enjoy going to the parks close by the water or out to the lake.  Where I go to relax sounds weird, with the importance of school to me and the busy and hectic life of being a mother of four I enjoy coming to the Howard library to study and do my school work because it’s quiet and peaceful and I use the time out of the house to concentrate on my school work only.

What I like most about Howard College
I like that it is smaller and always surprised at how quickly the staff remembers you like your truly important to them.  Everyone I have come across so far has been very nice and willing to help with everything they can.

What I tell future Howard College students
It is truly an amazing place to fulfill your schooling.  Everyone is so helpful and eager to see you succeed and want to help you any way they can to make it happen.  It is a smaller campus which makes it easier to have that more personal feel because there isn’t so many students that instructors and staff cannot remember who is who. They have excellent learning programs and the willingness to help whatever you need from tutoring, advice, answering questions, and so much more.
