Mary's Thoughts on Howard College

Why Howard College?
Howard College is affordable and intimate. Class sizes are small, the faculty and staff are amiable, and everyone is clearly here to help you succeed.

Why General Studies?
General Studies is a highly versatile degree for a transfer student. This major will allow me to maximize on transferable credits and to pursue more specialized classes depending on and tailored to whichever institution I transfer to.

Career Goals
I will pursue a Bachelor’s degree at a four year university. I will go in as a pre-med undergraduate and seek an interdisciplinary education focusing on natural and social sciences before applying to medical schools. I want to pursue a career in international Medical Humanitarianism, working for organizations like Doctors Without Borders. In pursuing any career, I want to love what I do, effect positive change in the world, be fully cognitively engaged, and be an indispensable tool in the service of others.

Favorite Professor
That is a difficult question to address … so many of the professors at Howard, and at my previous college, have touched my life in immeasurable ways. I actually have a list, and without any one of the professors on that list, my current academic trajectory would be nothing like it is today, and I would not have had the encouragement to dream big.

Best Studying Advice
Highlight as you read. Study a little every day. Find classmates to study with and quiz each other often, and hold each other accountable. Every little bit matters. Always sleep after studying, even if it’s just a nap.

Most Valuable Learning Experience
Aside from your own best efforts, other people, but especially your peers, are invaluable resources. Make connections and nurture them. In school, it is your peers that will encourage you through the day, through the year, and to your diploma.

Relax and Have Fun
I love to decompress at the movies, especially now that we have two theaters to choose from!

What I like most about Howard College
Aside from what drew me to Howard in the first place, I love that there is ample opportunity to start building an academic résumé and build real world skills through Student Life options. It is very easy to get involved with student organizations and each one provides invaluable extracurricular learning experiences that can enrich students’ future careers or academic experiences at four year institutions. My experiences will help me transfer, help me get scholarships, and most importantly, help me succeed when I get to my next step in higher learning because of what I have learned.

What I tell future Howard College students
Howard College offers a first rate education for a fraction of the cost of other institutions that teach the exact same core curriculum, and you will find support and compassion here that no other school can offer. This is the ideal place to take your first steps in your higher education. Howard will help you develop your own personal tools for success in all things if you take advantage of all that it has to offer.
